Piedmont Tech Grad Turning Long Days into Even Longer, Stronger Career

Brent Phillips’ typical day begins at 4:30 a.m. It’s hard to pinpoint when it ends because the Piedmont Technical College (PTC) graduate works full-time as a maintenance engineering & technology (ME&T) technician at GE Power in Greenville. With two associate degrees ― in mechatronics technology and electronic engineering technology ― as well as a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology ― Phillips is back in school again at PTC studying machine tool technology.

Smith Named New Director at the Greenwood Early Childhood Center

The Greenwood Early Childhood Center will have a new face next school year. Dr. Molly Smith has been named as the new Director of the Early Childhood Center. Dr. Smith replaces Mrs. Ginny Metts who recently announced her retirement. 

Dr. Smith is currently the Principal at Lakeview Elementary, a position she has held for the past seven years. Prior to becoming Principal at Lakeview, Dr. Smith served as an Instructional Specialist in District 50 at Lakeview, Rice Elementary, and Merrywood Elementary.

Evans Selected as Director of Evaluation

Chad Evans has been named as the new Director of Evaluation in Greenwood School District 50. Evans is currently the Principal at Greenwood High School, a position he has held for the last six years. Prior to becoming Principal at Greenwood High, Evans was the Principal of Brewer Middle School for five years. During his 23 years in District 50, Evans has served as an administrator, teacher, and athletic coach.

On February 12, 2020, Ninety Six High School Gymnasium was filled with students for the #JustAChicken presentation. Authors, Preston Thorne, and Langston Moore gave a powerful message to Ninety Six High School students, faculty and staff. The message was clear to take responsibility for your own actions. Life is not fair and no one cares about how great you think you are.

Lander supporters donate $40,000 in honor of university's 148th birthday

Friends and donors of Lander University celebrated its 148th birthday in a big way this week by raising $40,000 during the university’s inaugural Day of Giving.   
From noon on Feb. 11 to noon Feb. 12, nearly 160 donors from 10 states expressed their generosity for how their Lander experience prepared them for their lives and careers.

“We’re overwhelmed and thankful to the generous supporters of Lander,” said Mike Worley, vice president for University Advancement. “Our Day of Giving clearly united all of our friends and supporters. Each gift will be used effectively as we continue to transform the lives of our students.”

Lander University Campus Dining will soon include Chick-Fil-A

Lander University officials have announced that Atlanta-based fast food chain Chick-Fil-A will be opening a location on Lander’s campus.

While an official timeline is still being worked out, the university and Chick-Fil-A hope the campus store will be fully operational by the beginning of the 2020-21 academic year. The location will be a full-service restaurant, initially serving lunch and dinner only, before transitioning into serving breakfast.

Piedmont Tech Offers Manufacturing Certificate in McCormick

Piedmont Technical College (PTC) is springing forward in March when it makes the South Carolina Manufacturing Certification (SCMC) available for the first time in McCormick County. Just as a mechanical spring can potentially store and release energy when pressure is applied, this certification allows those who experience stress from being unemployed or underemployed to potentially gain skills and deploy them immediately in the workforce. Even better? It’s free for those who qualify.

Piedmont Tech Benefactor Says Giving Is an Easy Decision
Retired businessman and philanthropist Bil Heath prides himself on making good decisions, and so far, they’ve served him well. Take his wife, Susan, for example.“In 15 minutes, I knew I was going to marry her,” he said. “It took me three years to wear her down, but we’ve been married for 30 years. She is my best friend.”

The couple are longtime supporters of Piedmont Technical College (PTC) and members of the PTC Foundation Cornerstone Society, whose benefactors make significant pledges to the college through estate planning. Their enduring decisions to donate to PTC have been as steadfast as their marriage.

Lander encourages supporters to celebrate Day of Giving in honor of its 148th birthday

Lander University’s 148th birthday is fast approaching, and donors are encouraged to join in the celebration by taking part in a Day of Giving.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, Lander will celebrate Founder’s Day and mark its 148th birthday – that’s nearly a century and a half since the university first opened its doors in 1872.

From noon on Feb. 11 to noon Feb. 12, friends and donors are encouraged to galvanize their support of the university by donating in support of it and its students during Lander’s 24-hour Day of Giving campaign.

New Partnership Facilitates Smooth Transfer of Qualified PTC Pharmacy Tech Students to MUSC College of Pharmacy

Piedmont Technical College (PTC) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) have announced a new partnership in which highly qualified students at PTC will be able to transfer after two years to the MUSC College of Pharmacy to earn their doctor of pharmacy degree.

Moorer's big second half helps Lander stay in first place with 76-70 win

The Lander men's basketball team got 19 points from DaJuan Moorer and shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half as the Bearcats stayed atop the Peach Belt Conference standings with a 76-70 victory over Georgia College Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the PBC. The Bearcats, who extended their winning streak to five, began the night tied for first with USC Aiken and UNC Pembroke.

The Bobcats fell to 9-10, 6-5.

Lander, which made 17 of 29 shots in the second half, stayed undefeated at Horne Arena this season at 8-0.

Risinger Selected as the New Director of Professional Development/Induction
Virginia Risinger has been named as the new Director of Professional Development/Induction. Risinger has been employed with Greenwood School District 50 for 22 years.

In June, Risinger was selected as the Interim Director of Evaluation. Prior to her selection as Interim Director, Risinger served as a science teacher for several years, and became the district science instructional coach in 2013. Risinger also previously taught at the collegiate level at Lander University and Erskine College.

D50 Names Jamie Blount Principal at Emerald
Jamie Blount has been named as the Principal at Emerald High School. Blount was selected as the Interim Principal at Emerald in December. Blount is currently in her 3rd year and served as the Assistant Principal at the school prior to becoming Principal. Before working in District 50, Blount worked five years at Southside High School and seven years at Mauldin High School in Greenville as an English teacher. Along with her duties as an English teacher, Blount also served as a mentor to new teachers in the building and was named the school’s Teacher of the Year in 2014.

Greenwood Students Receive Awards for Academic Achievement at PTC Fall Graduation

At Piedmont Technical College’s recent fall commencement exercises, outstanding students from each of the college’s seven supporting counties were honored for academic achievement.

Honorees for Greenwood County are, from left: Noel Johnson, associate in applied science, business administration/accounting major; Joseph Ellinger, associate in applied science, criminal justice major; PTC Area Commissioner Y.J. Ahn; and Corey Boyter, associate in applied science, mechatronics technology major. Award recipient Daniel Johnson, who received a degree in automotive technology, is not pictured.

As she walked off campus way back on her first day of classes at Piedmont Technical College, graduation speaker Noel Johnson of Greenwood, pondered this question: “What could I accomplish if I took every opportunity I was given ― even if I failed?” she said. “That’s when I decided I wanted to be the best student I could be.”

Lander president elected chair of regional advisory board

Lander University President Richard Cosentino has been elected chair of the Peer Review Advisory Board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

The Peer Review Advisory Board provides assistance to SACSCOC and its staff on a wide range of topics bearing upon the evaluation process by keeping the commission apprised of issues raised and constructive suggestions offered by member institutions.

This position is only the latest addition to the president’s extensive resume of professional development. Cosentino is also a member of the South Carolina Department of Commerce’s Coordinating Council for Workforce Development, and serves as the Vice President of the Peach Belt Conference.

On Saturday, Jan 25, 2020 Greenwood School District 50 will be hosting a Recruitment Fair featuring job opportunities for Certified Teachers, Substitutes (Food Services, Classrom & Custodial) and Instructional Assistants, Bus Drivers and Custodians.

The fair will be held at the Emerald High School from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

'Exciting Weekend' Planned for Lander Homecoming

Lander University alumni, students, families and friends are invited to participate in this year’s Homecoming and Reunion Celebration.

The fun starts Thursday, Feb. 20, with the Alumni and Friends Golf Outing at The Links at Stoney Point, on Lake Greenwood. The $55 fee includes lunch, 18 holes of golf, cart rental and a Lander gift bag. Registration and lunch begin at 11:30, with golfers teeing off at 1 p.m. Participants asking to be paired with specific individuals should email alumni@lander.edu.

Lander University welcomes back students for Spring Semester
Lander University students returned from their holiday break for their first day of classes of the Spring 2020 semester. Classes for on-campus courses as well as for Lander’s growing online classes began Monday, Jan. 13. The week has been filled with navigating new course schedules, meeting professors and reuniting with friends.

Chris Liner Named as New GHS Head Football Coach

Chris Liner has been named as Head Football Coach at Greenwood High School. Liner has served since 2014 in the same role at Laurens High School in Laurens, SC. Prior to moving to Laurens, Liner served as Head Football Coach at Ninety Six High School from 2008-2014.

Thomas DuBose Named as New EHS Head Football Coach

Thomas DuBose has been named as Head Football Coach at Emerald High School. DuBose has served as the defensive coordinator for Abbeville High School’s Varsity Football team since 2004. In 2007, DuBose was named Abbeville High School’s Athletic Director.

In the hours leading up to the special day, Lander will celebrate a Day of Giving. During that 24-hour window, the Lander community, its friends and supporters are encouraged to galvanize their support of the university by donating in support of the university and its students.

Seven Greenwood 50 students passed the Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) Java SE 8 Programmer I exam in 2019.  The OCA exam is designed for people with technical backgrounds who have been working in a professional capacity.

NSHS Academic team take 1st place

Western Piedmont Education Consortium held its high school academic team tournament on December 2 & 3.  Ninety Six High won for the small high schools.  They will be competing in the state tournament at Lander University on March 6, 2020.
