Two Lander runners named to PBC cross country Team of Academic Distinction

Two student-athletes from Lander University were selected to the Peach Belt Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams of Academic Distinction, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomores Trent Powers and Katie Abare each earned the recognition for the first time in their careers. 

Powers, a computer science major with a 4.00 GPA, was Lander's top performer during the regular season, finishing with the best time in all four of the Bearcats' events. In Lander's three 8K events, Powers improved his time each race, finishing with a 27:28 at the Bobcat Invitational. He's one of only two players on the list with a 4.0 GPA.

Lander posts 10th-place finish at Patsy Rendleman Invitational

The Lander women's golf team finished 10th at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational after firing a 28-over 316 in the final round on Tuesday.

Caroline Hardee finished fourth at 1-over 145. Marley Barefoot tied for 23rd with an 8-over 152, while Tatum Warr's 15-over 159 was good for share of 53rd-place. Hannah Stephensonfinished tied for 75th with a 22-over 166. Chloe Hiott shot a 25-over 169 to finished 83rd. 

Limestone finished five shots ahead of UNC Pembroke to claim the team title. 

Lander concludes the fall at the Jekyll-O-Lantern Intercollegiate on Oct. 28-29.

Women's Cross Country Wins Flying Fleet Invitational
Due West, SC - The Erskine College women's cross country team placed five runners in the top 10 to run away with the Flying Fleet Invitational Saturday morning.  
Lizzie Naval won her second race of the year finishing a minute ahead of second.

Brittany SmithMary Ashley Moore, and Marie Berghaus finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively, while Parker Jones finished ninth.  Vanessa Harshaw finished 21st and Amanda Acone finished 24th for Erskine.

Erskine Announces Addition of Cheerleading/Dance for 2019-2020
Erskine College Director of Athletics Mark Peeler announced on Wednesday afternoon the addition of Cheerleading/Dance to the athletic program in 2020-21. The college has officially posted a position to hire a coach immediately with plans for a recruiting a full team for the Fall of 2020. The long term plan is to separate the two programs, Cheerleading and Dance, but in the. short-term one coach will be hired to recruit for both programs.

"This is an obvious direction to head in since we added football this year. We hope to have a full cheerleading squad by next fall. This program will add to the spirit and momentum we have seen this fall on campus building up to September of 2020," remarked Peeler.

Pippin Retiring as GHS Head Football Coach & Athletic Director in December

Coach Dan Pippin has decided to retire as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Greenwood High School in December. Pippin will continue to coach football and remain the Athletic Director at the school during the Fall season.  Pippin has been Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of the Eagles since February of 2014.

Lander's Parker named Peach Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week

Lander senior Jon Parker has been named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday afternoon.

A Greenwood, S.C. native, Parker shot a two-day score of ten under par to win the individual title at the Kiawah Island Invitational this past week. He finished with a tournament scorecard of 66-68—134.

Lander volleyball sweeps rival Erskine in front of record crowd

The Lander volleyball team swept rival Erskine, 25-14, 25-19, 25-16, in front of a program-record 533 fans Tuesday night in Finis Horne Arena to record its fifth consecutive win in the series.

Lander (7-1) has not suffered a loss to the Flying Fleet (4-6) since 2010.

Lander enjoys solid first round at Cutter Creek Invitational

The Lander women's golf team had four players notch top-10 scores in the first round of the Cutter Creek Invitational on Monday.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 317 (+29) and are in third place after one round at the Cutter Creek Golf Club.

Hannah Stephenson led the Bearcats with a four-over 76 to tie for fourth on the leaderboard. Caroline Hardee shot a six-over 78 to tie for sixth, while Madison Jordan carded an eight-over 80, good for ninth. Nichole Trombetta shot an 11-over 83, good for 14th. Marley Barefoot fired a 12-over 84 and is tied for 15th entering the final round.

Marshall named Lander men's lacrosse assistant coach

Lander head men's lacrosse coach Anthony LePore recently announced the hiring of Adam Marshall as an assistant coach. 

Marshall joins the Lander staff after a successful three-year stint at Belmont Abbey. Marshall served as the Crusaders' offensive coordinator and coached faceoffs and transition. 

Under Marshall's direction, Belmont Abbey averaged 15.1 goals per game in 2019 and earned the program's first NCAA Touranment berth. The Crusaders also captured a conference championship in 2018.

Trung Duong named Lander wrestling assistant coach

Lander head wrestling coach RC LaHaye announced the addition of Trung Duong as a full-time assistant to the wrestling staff on Tuesday.

Duong, a 2017 graduate of Newberry College, was a two-time All-American for the Wolves during LaHaye's tenure there, finishing in the top-eight of the national tournament in 2016 and 2017. Duong then served as a graduate assistant coach for Ohio Valley during the 2017-18 season.

The Bearcats, who received one first-place vote, have captured a share of nine PBC regular-season titles and five PBC Tournament championships. Lander has reached the PBC Tournament championship match in each of the last four seasons. The Bearcats have made 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including four consecutive bids.

Lander men's cross country picked seventh in PBC preseason poll

The 2019 cross country preseason polls have been released by the Peach Belt Conference officials and the Lander Bearcat are picked to finish tied for seventh on the men's side.

Augusta was picked to win the conference receiving seven votes. UNC Pembroke followed behind them and Flagler came in third.

Lander's Chretien earns Peach Belt Conference preseason honors

Thibault Chretien, a junior midfielder on the Lander men's soccer team, was selected to the Peach Belt Conference's preseason all-conference team as voted on by the league's eight head coaches.

Chretien is a two-time United Soccer Coaches first-team All-Southeast Region selection, a two-time second-team All-PBC honoree, and a two-time second-team D2CCA All-Southeast Region performer as a sophomore in 2018, scoring two goals and recording five assists. The Laval, France, native has racked up 21 points in his first two seasons at Lander and was honored as the league's co-Freshman of the Year in 2017. 

Lander begins its season on Sept. 6 as the Bearcats travel to Alabama Huntsville.
